Daily Top 5 >>> 7/31/08

  • "Junior Griffey" - If you haven't heard or seen, the White Sox have traded for Ken Griffey Jr. If this were 10 years ago, I'd be piss-my-pants excited right now. But it's not, and Junior is a slow, 38 year old outfielder. Still, I can't help but feel good about the move. Especially considering the Sox didn't have to give up any of their elite minor league prospects and got Cincinnati to pay half Griffey's salary. Team captain Paul Konerko will have to lead the team from a new position now: first bench. The Good Guys are set in the outfield so I'd like to see Swisher stay in CF and we give Griffey a try at 1B. He's done it before. And he can't get any worse than Paulie.

  • "Kenny Williams" - It's comforting to know you have a GM that's busting his ass to put the best team he can on the field. People gave Kenny a lot of shit during the spring for unloading Jon Garland and "renting" Orlando Cabrera for this year, among other things. Well those other things turned out to be Carlos Quentin, Alexei Ramirez, John Danks, and Gavin Floyd. Everything Kenny's touched has turned to gold so far, I just hope this Griffey thing works out defensively. Offensively we are set. Cabrera, AJ, Quentin, Dye, Thome, Griffey, Swisher, Crede/Fields, Ramirez is as potent a lineup as you'll see. But you gotta play defense to win too.
  • "Phines" - We had a picnic for the kiddies at work this afternoon and it was an experience. 30-minute lines for one hot dog and a cup of fruit, pop thieves, and eat-n-runners. Plus Phines. No misspellings here, she had it tatted on her arm so everybody would know how to spell it. Sounds like "finesse", spelled all effed up. And from the looks of her, her life involved everything but finesse.

  • "Huh?" - And speaking of picnics. Is it true that the term comes from something white people used to say before a lynching? I was told a story today at our homicide and torture-free picnic telling how back in Jim Crow days they used to make an event out of going to "Pick A Nigger". Hence the "picnic". First off, this seems kinda far-fetched to me. At all the picnics I've been to, the only thing being picked were hot links and ears of corn. And the only ropes were for tug-of-war. Did I just run into an imaginative old black person, or has anybody else ever heard this?
  • "100 Grand" - The greatest candy bar ever created.
*For all the Dave Chappelle fans out there, it took all my strength not to type "...this is doo doo baby!!" as a caption for this picture.

That'd be pretty hilarious if the picnic thing were true.
