Daily Top 5 >>> 6/7/12

"The Purple Line"
For everybody who takes public transit (being at NU has taught me to use qualifiers like these), the Purple Line will be closed from this Friday until Monday morning. Construction from Howard to Davis Street. Even if elevated tracks are beneath you, you still might be inconvenienced. Catching a cab might be harder in Evanston this weekend.

"Django Unchained"

So Tarantino is releasing a movie on Christmas starring, in the order most important to me, Kerry Washington, Jaime Foxx, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Now, Django Unchained is about a slave recruited by a white bounty hunter to murk a slave-owning family in exchange for his freedom and safety of his wife. Any Hollywood movie involving slavery is guaranteed to be fucked up, but I might watch this on bootleg. Kerry Washington. Also, it'll be cool to see slave masters get murdered I guess. Even though Jaime Foxx is still effectively a slave to his hitman boss.

"The Heat"
"I'm really looking forward to tonight's Game 6. Mostly because it's a chance to see the Death Star/Terminator/[insert famous villain] crash and burn for a second straight year. But also because it represents the complete opposite of what the NBA narrative for the East is supposed to be. Boston is supposed to be done, washed up. Miami is God's gift to David Stern. If the Heat lose, it's curtains for Erik Spoelstra and a hell of a long offseason for James and Wade. I like the Cs in 7 games, and an epic Kevin Garnett postgame interview.

Over the weekend, the North Carolina Republican Party decided that LGBT individuals should be denied protection under anti-discrimination laws. Keeping in line with the fine history of democracy in this country, they added this reminder to the end of their platform proposal: "We oppose all forms of invidious discrimination." That's all that really need be said.

A really disturbing article on Black Agenda Report was published yesterday detailing the intensifying movement in Israel to eliminate all African migrants and asylum seekers. Before you dismiss this as making a mountain out of a thousand or so "racists" or "psychos" that don't speak for the nation as a whole when they rally for "Death to Sudanese", peep some gems from Israeli elected officials right quick. "Anyone that penetrates Israel's border should be shot" - Knesset member Aryeh Eldad, National Union. "The infiltrators are a cancer in our body. The infiltrators must be expelled from Israel! Expulsion now" - Likud Member of Parliament. “This country belongs to us, to the white man" - Eli Yishai, Interior Minister. "Africans threaten the social fabric of society and the Jewish and democratic character of the country" - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. These people do speak for the nation of Israel, and they do so quite clearly. They must die from laughter every time Barack sends over another million bucks of military support.
